LPF/AFA Grant Announcement

LORO PARQUE FUNDACION
AND THE
AMERICAN FEDERATION OF AVICULTURE
2006 JOINT AWARD FOR
PARROTS AND AVICULTURE
The American Federation
of Aviculture (AFA) and the Loro Parque Fundación (LPF) jointly offer a
grant of US$5,000 for a project which aims to improve the welfare and/or
conservation of one or more species of parrots (Psittaciformes),
specifically by association with aviculture and/or the use of avicultural
techniques, in captivity and/or in the field. A broad range of subjects
for projects is possible, but all candidate projects must have a clear
link to aviculture. There is no geographical restriction on where the
project can take place.
The project must commence
in 2006, and the grant will be for the duration of one year from the
starting date. The project is expected to yield results appropriate to its
stated objectives by the end of the grant period. Please note that
currently this grant scheme is not for multi-year funding of projects.
The deadline for receipt
of applications for the grant is Friday September 23rd 2005,
and the successful applicant will be informed as soon as possible after
the decision of the judging panel. This will be after the third week in
October 2005.

The AFA is a non-profit national organization
established in 1974, whose mission and purpose is promote the advancement
of aviculture through educational programs that enable better husbandry,
management, and living conditions for exotic birds; promote avian research
and conservation of exotic birds; keep its members aware of legislative
issues that affect aviculture and aviculturists and keep legislators aware
of the need for fair and equitable regulations. The goal of AFA is to
insure long-term, self-sustaining populations of exotic birds both in
captivity and in the wild.
The LPF, member of the IUCN, is a non-profit
conservation organisation with its headquarters at Loro Parque, Tenerife,
Canary Islands, Spain. It operates on an international basis with the
mission is to conserve parrots and their habitats, through education,
applied research, responsible breeding programmes, and community-based
conservation activities that use parrots as ambassadors for nature.
