Position Statement of the AFA

Concerning the
deregulation of the aviculture
of the Quaker parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus):
The AFA supports and
condones the responsible aviculture of the quaker parakeet, Myiopsitta
monachus.
The AFA defines
responsible aviculture as the humane care and propagation of an
avian species, ensuring an environmentally enriched life and
protection from harm and disease. Responsible aviculture shall
also include, the implementation of all possible measures to
prevent the accidental release of any bird from captivity, and to
minimize the exposure to indigenous avian species.
The AFA feels that the
putative threat to agriculture that may be posed by the Quaker
parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus, is scientifically
unsubstantiated and arguable.
The AFA strongly
opposes any unlawful and purposeful release of a non-indigenous avian
species.
